How to Set Up Reaction Roles on Discord (Reactions, Buttons and Menus)

Let members pick their own roles on Discord with reactions, buttons or dropdown menus. Covers colour roles, ping roles, verification and the five reaction role modes.

How to Set Up Reaction Roles on Discord (Reactions, Buttons and Menus)

Self assignable roles let members tell your server who they are and what they care about: their favourite colour, the games they play, which announcements they want pings for. Doing this by hand does not scale. Reaction roles let members pick roles themselves by clicking an emoji, a button or a dropdown.

This guide shows how to set them up with Ethvex, including the different styles and modes that make role panels feel polished.

PanelExample rolesBest mode
Colour rolesViolet, Ocean, Rose, MintUnique, so picking a new colour swaps the old one
Ping rolesAnnouncements, Events, GiveawaysNormal, so members can turn each on and off
Game or interest rolesMinecraft, Valorant, Art, MusicNormal
Region or pronoun rolesEU, NA, Asia or he/him, she/her, they/themUnique or Normal
VerificationVerified, I agree to the rulesVerify, so the role is never taken away

Step 1: Get the role order right #

Create the roles first in Server Settings → Roles. Then make sure the Ethvex role sits above every role you want it to hand out. Discord does not let a bot give out roles higher than its own.

Step 2: Create a group #

Run /reactionroles (or %rr) and press New Group. A group is one message with a set of roles on it, like Pick your colour. Give it a name, then choose a style and a mode.

Styles

  • Reaction: members click an emoji under the message. Classic and available on every plan.
  • Button (Pro): a row of buttons with a label, emoji and colour. The clearest option for most people.
  • Select (Pro): a dropdown menu. Great when you have lots of roles, and each option can have a description.

Modes

ModeWhat happens
NormalPick to get the role, pick again to remove it.
UniqueOnly one role from the group at a time. Picking a new one swaps it.
VerifyGives the role but never removes it.
DropOnly removes the role. Handy for opting out of a default role.
BindingOnce you have it, it cannot be removed through the panel.

Reaction style with Normal mode works on the free plan, which allows 3 groups. Pro unlocks unlimited groups, every style and every mode.

Step 3: Add your roles #

Add an entry for each role, linking an emoji or a label to it. For dropdowns you can also add a short description under each option, like Get pinged for every event.

Step 4: Design the message #

Choose how the panel looks: plain text, an embed or a modern container. Set the title, body, footer, colour, image and thumbnail. A short line explaining what the roles do helps a lot, for example: Pick one colour. Picking another swaps it automatically.

Step 5: Publish it #

Pick the channel, usually a dedicated #roles channel. Leave the message ID empty to post a new message, or paste the ID of an existing message to attach the roles to it. Press Save, then Apply to Message.

Guards that keep panels tidy #

  • Max roles limits how many roles from one group a member can hold, for example 3 game roles.
  • Denied roles stop members with certain roles, such as Muted, from using the panel.
  • DM on fail tells a member privately why they could not get a role.

Pair it with auto roles #

Auto roles give every new member a starter role the moment they join, and can also set a nickname template. Use auto roles for the default and reaction roles for everything members choose themselves.

Wrapping up #

A good role channel makes a server feel personal and cuts down on unwanted pings. Start with one colour panel and one ping roles panel, then add more as your community grows. Every option is in the Reaction Roles docs.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my reaction role not working?

Almost always because the bot's role is below the role it is trying to give. Drag the Ethvex role above every role in the group in Server Settings → Roles.

Are buttons better than reactions?

Buttons are clearer for most members and do not clutter the message with emoji counts. Reactions are classic and work on every plan. Dropdowns are best when you have many roles.

Can I add reaction roles to a message that already exists?

Yes. Paste the existing message ID when choosing the target, and Ethvex attaches the roles to that message instead of posting a new one.

Try it on your own server

Ethvex is free to add and every system is set up through simple panels. No code needed.
