How to Set Up Welcome Messages on Discord That People Actually Read

Create Discord welcome messages that greet new members by name, show their member number, point them to your rules and roles, and track which invite they used.

How to Set Up Welcome Messages on Discord That People Actually Read

The first few seconds after someone joins your server decide whether they stay. A blank channel list and silence feels empty. A friendly greeting that uses their name and shows them where to go next feels alive. That is what a good welcome message does.

This guide shows how to build one with Ethvex, plus ideas for what to write.

What makes a welcome message work #

  • It uses their name, so it feels personal.
  • It gives one clear next step, like picking roles or reading the rules.
  • It is short. Two or three lines beat a wall of text.
  • It looks good, with your server's colour and maybe their avatar.

Step 1: Open the welcome panel #

Run /welcomeconfig (or %wc). You need the Manage Server permission. Pick the channel where welcomes should be posted and switch the system on.

Step 2: Design the message #

Welcome messages in Ethvex are built from blocks, up to 8 per message: text, sections with a thumbnail, image galleries and separators. Pick an accent colour and a thumbnail, either the member's avatar, a custom image or none.

Use variables to make it personal:

{user}

Mentions the new member

{username}

Their username

{server}

Your server name

{join_num}

Which number member they are

{member_count}

How many members you have now

{invite_code}

The invite they used, when tracking is on

Step 3: Add buttons (Pro) #

Link buttons to your rules, roles channel or website make the next step one click away. These are part of Pro, along with leave messages and welcome DMs.

Step 4: Test it #

Press Send Test Message to see exactly what new members will see, before anyone joins.

Extra options worth knowing #

OptionWhy use it
Ping rolePing a Welcome Team role so someone says hi in chat.
Auto deleteRemove the message after 30 seconds to 30 minutes to keep the channel clean.
Suppress mentionsShow the mention without actually pinging the member.
Welcome DM (Pro)Also send a private message with key info.
Invite tracking (Pro)See which invite brought each member in, great for measuring promotions.
Leave messages (Pro)Post a short goodbye when someone leaves.

Welcome message ideas you can copy #

Friendly community

Hey {user}, welcome to {server}! You are member #{join_num}. Grab your roles and come say hi in general.

Gaming server

{user} just spawned in! Pick your games in the roles channel to find a squad. Member #{join_num}.

Study or work server

Welcome {user}. Please read the rules, then introduce yourself in the introductions channel. Good to have you here.

Pair it with auto roles #

Auto roles give every new member a starter role the moment they join. Together with a welcome message and a roles panel, new members go from joining to fully set up in under a minute.

Wrapping up #

A personal, short welcome with one clear next step is one of the easiest ways to keep new members around. Every option is in the Welcome and Leave docs.
