How to Set Up Auto Roles on Discord (Free Auto Role Bot)

Give every new member a role the moment they join Discord, with separate roles for bots, a join delay for verification and automatic nicknames. A free auto role bot guide.

How to Set Up Auto Roles on Discord (Free Auto Role Bot)

When someone joins your server, the first thing they usually need is a role. A Member role that opens your channels, a Bots role for new bots, maybe a starter level. Doing that by hand means somebody on your team has to be online every time someone joins.

An auto role bot does it for you. This guide shows how to set up auto roles with Ethvex, including separate roles for bots, a join delay and automatic nicknames. It is free for up to 5 roles.

What auto roles can do #

FeatureWhat it does
Human rolesRoles every new person gets when they join.
Bot rolesA separate list of roles for new bots, so they never get your member roles.
Join delayWaits a little before giving roles, from 5 seconds up to 10 minutes.
Auto nicknameSets a nickname for new members from a template, like ✦ {displayname}.

Before you start #

Open Server Settings → Roles and drag the Ethvex role above every role you want it to give. Discord does not let a bot hand out a role higher than its own. Ethvex needs Manage Roles, and Manage Nicknames if you use auto nicknames.

Set up auto roles in 4 steps #

Open the panel

Run /autoroles (or %ar). You need the Manage Server permission.

Add roles for humans

Press Add Role in the humans list and pick your member roles. Free servers can add up to 5.

Add roles for bots

Do the same in the bots list, for example a Bots role. Each list has its own switch, so you can use one without the other.

Switch it on

Turn the list on. From now on everyone who joins gets the right roles straight away.

Use a join delay with verification #

If new members have to pass Discord's membership screening or a verification step first, a short join delay stops roles landing before they are ready. Choose no delay, 5, 10 or 30 seconds, or 1, 2, 5 or 10 minutes.

Using Ethvex Verification? Give the access role through verification instead, and keep auto roles for cosmetic or notification roles that everyone should have.

Automatic nicknames #

Auto nickname gives new members a nickname from a template of up to 32 characters. Apply it to everyone, humans only or bots only. These variables work in the template:

{username}

Their username

{displayname}

Their display name

{join_num}

Their join number

{join_date}

The date they joined

For example, ✦ {displayname} turns Luna into ✦ Luna the moment they join, and [BOT] {username} makes every bot easy to spot.

Already have members without the role? #

Auto roles only work for people who join from now on. To give a role to everyone already in your server, use Role All once, then let auto roles handle new members.

Wrapping up #

Auto roles take a minute to set up and save your team from ever handing out a member role by hand again. Pair them with a welcome message so new members are greeted and set up at the same time. Every option is in the Auto Roles docs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I give roles automatically on Discord?

Use an auto role bot. With Ethvex, run /autoroles, add the roles new members should get, switch the list on, and everyone who joins gets them straight away.

Is the Ethvex auto role bot free?

Yes. Free servers can give up to 5 roles on join, with separate lists for humans and bots, a join delay and auto nicknames. Pro removes the role limit.

Why is my auto role not being given?

Almost always because the Ethvex role is below the role it should give. Move the Ethvex role higher in Server Settings → Roles.

Can bots get a different role than members?

Yes. Ethvex keeps a separate list of roles for bots, so new bots never get your member roles.
